SELECT historical papers; 1641-1661.
1. Covers of seventeen letters from Charles I., when in Edinburgh, to Edward Nicholas, Acting-Secretary of State, being chiefly letters from Nicholas to the King returned by the latter with the note "yours apostyled "; 15 Aug.-18 Nov. 1641. f. 3. The actual letters, the full number of which (see a list on f. 1) was forty-three, are preserved at Wotton, and are printed in Bray's Memoirs of J. Evelyn, 1818, vol. ii., part ii., p. 1. On the cover of a letter (f. 15) dated by Nicholas 6 Nov., and apostiled by Charles 13 Nov., is a note to Nicholas from Queen Henrietta Maria in pursuance of the King's directions (cf. Bray, op. cit. p. 61).
2. Instructions from Charles I. to Sir Edward Herbert, Attorney General, relative to the impeachment of Lord Kimbolton, [Viscount Mandeville] and the Five Members; 3 Jan. 1641/2. Holograph. f. 20. They are as follows:-
1. You ar to accuse those six , jointlie & seuerallie.
2. You ar to reserue the power of making additionalls.
3. When the Comittie for examination is a naming (Wch you must press to be close & under tey of secresie) if eather Essex, Warwick, Holland, Say, Mandeuill, Wharton, or Brooke be named, you must desyre that they may be spared because you ar to examine them as witnesses for me." These directions (with the exception of art. 3) are referred to both in the answer of Sir E. Herbert to his impeachment and in the King',s letter on his behalf to the Lord Keeper (Rushworth, vol. iv. pp. 490, 493). From the erasures noted above it appears that the impeachment of Lord Mandeville was an afterthought, the first intention being to call him as a witness with the other opposition peers, whom it was thought advisable to prevent by this device from serving on the examining committee.
3. Warrant from Charles I. to Sir Edward Herbert to desist from further proceedings on the impeachment of Lord Kimbolton and the Five Members; Theobalds, 3 Mar. 1641[2]. Signed. f. 21.
4. Petition to Charles 1. from the gentry, citizens and others of the County and City of York, that he will shut his ears to malignant counsel and trust in the wisdom and fidelity of Parliament; circ. Jan. 1642. Signed by [Sir] Tho. Gower, Sheriff of co. York; Edmund Cowper, Mayor of York, [Sir] Tho. Fairfax, [Sir] John Savile, [Sir] Marmaduke Langdale, and many others. f. 23.
