CHARTULARY of the Cistercian abbey of Byland (Bellalanda) in the N. Riding of co. York. In Latin. Arranged under places alphabetically. The latest document is dated 1393 and Richard II. is described (f. 92 b) as " rex ultimus." The volume, described by Tanner and Burton under the title of Registrum, is now very imperfect, having lost the first 73 leaves and many in the middle and at the end. Inserted at f. 90 is an original award, in Engl., by Sir Raff Ewre, Kt., and Richard Bower al. Shirley, between Byland Abbey and John Wywell, gent., touching rent of lands at Osgodby, co. York, dat. 26 Oct. 18 Hen. VIII. [1526]. At f. 2 is prefixed an engraved view of Byland by Samuel Buck, dedicated to Thomas Bellasis, Viscount Fauconberge, in 1721. Vellum (exc. ff. 1, 2); ff. 118. Temp. Hen. IV. Initials in red and blue. Belonged successively (according to Tanner) to Brian Fairfax, John Rushworth in 1647, Thomas Bellasis, Earl of Fauconberge, in 1698, and Sir Thomas Frankland, Kt. Entered in Sir T. Phillipps's catalogue as " ex bibl. C.D. arm." Phillipps MS.
