A. Register of proceedings; 13 Nov. 1554-27 May 1555. A rough copy, supplementing the rough Privy Council register, known as 'Queen Mary I', in the Public Record Office (P.C.2). The present manuscript was not available to J. R. Dasent, who for the entries for the above period in his edition, Acts of the Privy Council of England, new ser., v, A.D. 1554-1556, 1892, pp. 81- 136, was obliged to rely wholly on the fair copy 'Queen Mary II'. The manuscript resembles Lansdowne MS. 238, ff. 1-62, another rough Privy Council register, 20 Nov. 1558-30 Apr. 1559, in including a number of original recognizances, the signatories of which are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. On the relationship between rough and fair copies of the register see E. R. Adair in the English Historical Review, xxxviii, 1923, pp. 410-422. Paper; ff. i+46. Quarto. 1554-1555. Binding of diced calf, gold-tooled, early 19th cent. Ff. 35, 36 are torn at the foot. The name 'W. Smythe' is written twice in a 16th cent. hand at the top of f. 2. Armorial bookplates of Henry Poley, M.P., of Badley, Suffolk, 1703 (f. 1b*), and (f. i) Sir Thomas Gage Saunders Sebright, 8th Bart. (d. 1864).
