A. Facsimile copy of the evidence of Assad Farran, an interpreter on Stanley’s Emin Pasha relief expedition, regarding life at Yambuya Camp from 22 June 1887 to 8 June 1888; 4 March 1890. Farran’s evidence documents alleged atrocities committed by members of the expedition, including Major Edmund M. Barttelot, the commander of the camp, and James Sligo Jameson, a naturalist. The alleged atrocities at Yambuya are now regarded as the inspiration for a number of scenes in Joseph Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness. Presented by Joan Furtaw, 2004.
