John Gielgud Archive. Annotated chronology of the roles of Kate Terry Lewis (b. 1844, d. 1924), actress, Gielgud’s maternal grandmother, 1850–1867, by Kate Terry Gielgud, her eldest daughter and Gielgud’s mother. Kate Terry was the eldest daughter of Benjamin Terry and Sarah Ballard, strolling players, and followed her parents onto the stage at the age of three. At the height of her fame as an actress she left the stage to marry Arthur Lewis, director of the successful haberdashery firm of Lewis & Allenby.
