John Gielgud Archive. Four programmes written and decorated by Gielgud for performances at the Mars Theatre, circa 1918.
1. 'The stone of Mecca: a play of the Crusaders and Saracens, by A. J. Gielgud'.
2. 'For one night only: a play in 3 acts, by V. H. Gielgud'. In this programme 'F. E. Gielgud' (John’s sister Eleanor) is listed as playing 'Betty Carew' and 'Celeste, a French maid', the only place her name appears in the Mars Theatre documents apart from one of the title pages in 81329 A.
3. 'The house at the corner, a tale of Venice in 4 acts, by A. J. Gielgud'. 'Miss Doris Wyeford as Donna Lucia' appears on the cover page, which is the only part of this programme to survive. Miss Wyeford’s name otherwise appears frequently in the cast-lists in 81329 A.
4. 'Special Sunday performance for soldiers and sailors of "All-Star Varieties", by West-End artistes'. An elaborate programme consisting of sketches and musical items culminates in 'The Mars Company' in 'How he won the D.S.O., or, The story of the Nosery', with an opening scene set in 'the Kaiser’s bath-room'.
