Y. Letter from the cartographer John Arrowsmith to 'my dear Mary', 30 Apr. 1869. The map mentioned in the letter is probably Arrowsmith's small map of central Asia on a scale of 1:5702400 (90 miles to an inch), which was unfinished at his death but published in 1876 with additions and corrections up to that year. John Arrowsmith (b. 1790, d.1873) was a founder member of the Royal Geographic Society and active as a globe-maker and hydrographer as well as a map publisher.
