CC. Letter from William James, land surveyor, to Col. Campbell of the Excise Board, 24 September 1829; enclosed in a printed notice relating to proposed works for a new town and floating harbour at Devoran, and sealed with the impression in black shellac of a seal bearing an image of King Alfred and the inscription 'Alfredus Magnus'. William James (b.1771, d.1837) was active as a surveyor in Cheshire, Staffordshire, and almost the whole of Southern England, working on canal and railway surveys as well as estate and inclosure plans. At the time of this letter he was living in Bodmin, in Cornwall.
