HH. Bill of expenses of the King's Messenger, Ralph Heslop, for journeys to and from Paris on 13 Nov. and 3 Dec. 1782, certified for payment by Charles James Fox as Foreign Secretary; 7 Dec. 1783. Signed. The bill includes additional expenses on the road to Paris for 'a Very large Case of Maps', needed in connection with the negotiations that concluded with the signature of the Preliminary Articles between Great Britain and the United States on 30 Nov. 1782. The case of maps probably included the copy of the 1775 edition of Mitchell's map of North America which was annotated [by Richard Oswald?] to show inter alia the proposed boundary between the United States and Canada and is now known as the 'Red-Lined Map' [K. 118.d. 26 formerly K. Top 118.49.b]. Purchased from J. L. M. Gulley, July 1998.
