Walpole Papers. Vol. ccxxxii ( ff.). Papers mainly relating to John Plunkett, Jacobite spy; seized in October 1722, apparently at a Mr Coleman's House, by Daniel Chandler and Thomas Jones, whose initials occur on many of the documents; originally in a portfolio and seen by Coxe, but taken out and described circa 1865 ? by Frederick Walpole (?); Coxe's notes occur frequently in the collection; 1713 - 1724; with additional material 1742 - 1865; contents as follows:-
1. Notes by Frederick Walpole and another, describing his ( Walpole's ) finding the papers and the contents of some of the letters; n.d.; watermark 1865.
2. " List of Papers relating to Plunkett "; a contemporary list of the papers seized probably in 1722; includes cyphers, letters from Christopher Layer to his wife, from Lord and Lady Middleton and from the Duke of Berwick; some of the papers are no longer in the collection; 1713 - 1722.
3. Notes by Coxe on Lord Godolphin; n.d.
4. Letter to [ Walpole? ], 16 Aug. 1724 from a G. Patmer or Palmer, partly in cypher, on Benjamin Keene's behalf; Poyntz' name appears on the cover; with a list, in a different hand, of persons known to be friends of the Pretender.
5. Tract, called by Coxe, " Plunkett's Dream "; According to an anon. note, the second part of a " Narrative of political Transactions " by Plunkett; published in Macpherson's Collection as " Jack Rogers's Dream "; found among the Townshend Papers; a duplicate according to Coxe; according to the latter, probably written in 1716 - or while the King was in Hanover - or 1717; extensive annotations by Coxe; also a few notes in other hands; names partly in code, and decoded by Coxe and others; [ 1716 or 1717? ]
6. Anon. paper, in code, " From The Townshend papers ", 6 Dec. 1717, mentioning Rogers or Plunkett; refers to plotting by Rogers [Plunkett] that would instal James on the throne by Easter 1718; partly decoded; later copy; n.d.; watermark 1797.
7. Papers in Plunkett's hand; annotated by Coxe: " T. P." [ Townshend Papers? ]; according to a note in a second, earlier, hand, the papers, mostly in French, seem to be copies of the letters of a German minister in Hanover in 1719 [ corrected to 1719 - 1721 by Coxe ]. One annotation by Frederick Walpole (?). One letter written on a legal document, [ aft. 1713 ]; some letters imperf.; copies; many of the documents are undated or only partly dated, and so have been left in their original order; 1719 - [ 1721? ].
8. Anon. letter to " My Lord ", written after Plunkett's death in 1738; probably in code; cypher; annotated by Coxe : " C. P- [ Cholmondely Papers ? ] probably to the D[uke] of A[tholl ] [ ? ] "; 25 Feb. 1742 [1743?].
