B. Entrance to Boulogne harbour; 1805. Scale 1:10000. 'Echelle d'un millimetre pour 10 metres.' Map shows the coast from 'Moulin Hubert' in the North to the 'Mont de couple' in the south, and extends inland beyond the harbour as far as St Martin and Bertingen. Map oriented with East at top. Boulogne itself with the French encampments and outer emplacements is shown in detailed plan. Relief including cliffs and dunes indicated, and roads also marked. Some defensive works are marked in red; these probably represent proposals for the positions fortified by earthworks, thrown up as outer defences after Napoleon withdrew the bulk of the invasion force in August 1805, leaving a garrison of 30,000 soldiers and 15,000 sailors to guard against an English attack. See Lottin, op. cit., p. 193.
Ink tracing and watercolour on onion paper. Two sheets, joined, backed with two sheets of heavier paper. 420 x 390mm.
