A partly autograph music manuscript, in pencil, setting a text by Bertolt Brecht (translated by Hans Keller). Signed and dated by Britten: 'Aldeburgh October-November 1968' (f. 1), with an additional folio dated in a copyist's hand: 'Sept. '69' (f. 48).
The volume comprises:
- title page (f. 1), at the head of which Britten has recorded that the work was written for 'members of Wandsworth School choir and orchestra (director Russell Burgess) to perform on the 50th Anniversary of Save the Children Fund at St Paul's Cathedral, May 19th 1969', and described the work as 'A Ballad for children's voices & orchestra';
- abbreviated German title: 'K[inder]K[reuzzug]' (f. 2);
- an extensive composer's note referring to notation voicing, to percussion groups, and to the probable necessity for two conductors (f. 2v);
- 'Children's Crusade' (ff. 4-47v), including the English translation within the score;
- an additional folio (f. 48) dated 'Sept. '69': 'Amendments to vocal line put into dylined full score used as German text Master Copy' (not in Britten's hand).
