BOOKS OF HOURS, ETC. Vol. I. Hours of Francesco Sforza; 1491-1494. Latin. Written and illuminated for Francesco Maria, 'Il Duchetto', son of Duke Gian Galeazzo Sforza of Milan. The manuscript must have been made between Francesco's birth in 1491 and his father's death in 1494. The main decorated pages have been removed but the small miniatures which remain are in a style closely related to that of Giovan Pietro Birago, principal illuminator of the Sforza family (cf. Add. 34294). Remaining decoration consists of the following: arms in lower margin (f. 1); small miniatures of Francesco Sforza with his guardian angel (f. 112v), St Michael (f. 115), St Anthony (f. 115v), St Christopher (f. 117), St Sebastian (f. 118), St Roch (f. 119), St Laurence (f. 119v), Christ with instruments of the Passion (f. 135); minor initials of coloured capitals on gold grounds; major initials in similar style, some with foliate ornament, accompanied by partial rectilinear borders with foliate sprays (ff. 51v, 83, 84v, 89v, 95). The script is a humanistic book script. The scribe was a member of the Milanese Chancery (see A. C. de la Mare, 'Scrittura e manoscritti a Milano al tempo degli Sforza', Milano nell'eta' Ludovico il Moro, Milan, 1983, pp. 406-407).
Vellum; iii+145. Sec. fol.: 'sancta misericordia'. 122 x 85mm.; written space 85 x 55mm. Ruled in hard-point for single columns of 18 lines. Portions of the text, including the major decorated pages (some of which have left offsets), have been excised. Vertical catchwords (ff. 25v, 47v, 127v, 142v) and some traces of quire signatures. 'Vilely rebound' (note on f. iii) in dark red leather, gilt-stamped, 19th cent.(?).
