BOOKS OF HOURS, ETC. Vol. II B. Two single leaves from a Flemish Book of Hours; late 15th cent. Latin. The first has a miniature of St Mark (f. 1v), introducing his gospel extract, and the second a miniature of St Apollonia (f. 2). Both are accompanied by full strewn-borders of flowers and fruit. Script is a Gothic textualis quadrata. The original vellum leaves are inlaid into larger vellum pages and this, together with the appearance of various pencil markings in the lower margins, suggests that the leaves may have passed through the collection of John Boykett Jarman, dispersed in 1864; see Janet Backhouse, 'A Victorian Connoisseur and his Manuscripts', British Museum Quarterly, XXXIII (1967-68), pp. 76-92.
Vellum; ff. 2. 163 x 122mm.; original leaf (trimmed) 95 x 71mm.
