COLNAGHI PAPERS. Vol. I. Album containing letters from Dominic Ellis Colnaghi, to his parents, other family members, and anonymous correspondents; 1852-1859. This first volume of private correspondence comprises Colnaghi's first period of travels mainly in the Levant, Greece and the Greek islands (with other European visits en route from and to England) including those times spent deputising for the British Vice-Consul in Mytilene, travelling as secretary to Sir John Byng, Earl of Strafford, and finally as the British Vice-Consul in Missolonghi. The letters contain accounts of the people, customs and antiquities of the above areas with numerous sketched drawings, maps and plans, and extracts from other works. These letters are arranged chronologically and are prefaced each year by Colnaghi's own recollections for that year: the first such autobiographical account summarises the years 1834-1852. Content is mostly historical or personal, not political, but events such as the Crimean War receive comment. There are also (ff. 1, 373-388) engravings of Mycenae, Mytilene, Patras, Constantinople, Smyrna, Rhodes, Missolonghi, Vienna, and Messina. Bookplate (f. i) of Dominic Ellis Colnaghi.
