FULLER COLLECTION. Vol. III. Plans of the Sussex estates of Thomas West, by Anthony Everenden; 1639. The estates comprise: demesne lands of Woodmancote, Morley Park and Farm, King's (Farm) and the Lee lands, in the parish of Woodmancote, W. Suss.; Ovingdean, E. Suss.; 'Howndeane, Winterborne and ye Fludes', in the Borough of Lewes; Southover Brooks and Lamport Brooks in the Borough of Lewes. There are eight plans (ff. 2v-7v) and 'tabells' of measurements and valuation of land at Woodmancote, Morley Park and Farm, Kings Farm, Lee lands, Ovingdean, East Aldrington (the plan of which allegedly went missing at Sotheby's) and Lewes (f. 1v). Cardinal points in English, with variable placing of North. Variable scales. The principal plan (ff. 3v-4) has a signed and dated cartouche. On Everenden, see P. Eden and A. S. Bendall, Dictionary of Estate Surveyors (, where his working life is given as circa 1630-1653, and R. V. Tooley, Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers. Supplement (1985), p. 34. Everenden produced other plans of lands in Sussex and Kent, see Sussex Record Society vol. LXI (1962), 14, 17, 18, and vol. LXVI (1968), 4, 5. This work was produced around the middle of Everenden's career, probably as a presentation copy for the patron, and is unfinished. With decorated borders, cartouches surmounted by dividers set above scale bars, and compass roses in colours and gold. Buildings in perspective view. The strapwork decoration used is a little old-fashioned. A note by Fuller's wife records that this was his last purchase (f. 1). Sold at Sotheby's, 25 July 1961, lot 451.
Ink and colour washes on vellum. ff. ii+7. 445 x 315mm.
