FRANCIS WORMALD MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. II. Genealogia Deorum; Italy, 14th cent. Latin. With illuminations in roundels depicting classical deities and heroes (male and female), popes, kings and emperors, as portrait heads, full-length figures or participating in military or allegorical scenes. See J. Zahlten, 'Hercules Wirtembergicus', Jahrbuch der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen in Baden-Würtemberg, 18 (1981), pp. 7-46. Folios. ii-viii carry extensions to the main series in a 17th-century hand, with some pen drawings and tinting in brown. Later [18th-century?] painting of a naturalistic plant (f. 10). Small painted arms consisting of a blue cartouche trimmed in red, bearing three silver stars and a gold diagonal band with a black wing (f. 1). Wormald's ownership inscription inside upper board, with earlier nos '46' and '2527'. Formerly Phillipps MS. 10417.
Vellum and paper; ff. 10+ix. 430 x 305mm. Paper pastedowns and nine paper flyleaves to rear. Gatherings (2), i2, ii8. Script is an Italian 'as' glossularis. 18th-century (?) binding of brown leather over card, with gilt tooling and arms (central shield bearing unicorn, set on another quartered with knotwork and two lions rampant), enclosed by a helm and chain of office with scallop shells and pendant carrying an angel, in central roundels on both boards. Boards lined with fragments of printed texts in Latin and French.
