FRANCIS WORMALD MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. V. Dionysius Pseudo-Areopagite, Hierarchia; England, circa 1260-1270. Latin. The Latin translation and commentary by Robert Grosseteste. Medieval press-mark of Waltham Abbey 'clxxiii. al. ca.' (f. 1v), of late 13th or 14th cent. From the collection of Dr E. G. Millar (bookplate, f. ii).
Vellum; ff. iii+217. Sec. fol.: 'lumina apparitionem . . .'. 210 x 150mm. Vellum pastedowns and fourteen vellum flyleaves to front and seven to back. Gatherings (20) of 10, except i8 (lacks 8), ii-iii8, xiv12. Catchwords, largely trimmed. Text ends on f. 203, remainder of quire xx blank, except for extensive metal-point notes. Pricked and ruled (double bounding lines) in metal-point for single columns of 31/32 lines. Written space 150 x 92mm. Script is a Gothic textualis rotunda and a cursiva anglicana media / formata. Contemporary marginalia. Contemporary binding of kermes-stained leather over wooden board, with traces of two clasps on fore-edge with ferrous and copper staining.
Decoration consists of a 5-line major initial 'O', gilded and set on a rectilinear ground with pink and blue infills highlighted in white, with an oxidized lead surround (f. 15), with a similar initial 'I' with red flourishing (f. 57v). Minor initials in red or blue. Running titles in ink.
