SIR H. ELLIS AND H. J. ELLIS. Vol. I. Collections relating to the Ellis and related families; 1794-1924. Partly autograph and printed. This collection of genealogies was begun by Sir Henry Ellis, Principal Librarian of the British Museum, 1836-circa 1854, and continued, circa 1906-1924, by his grandson Henry John Ellis, Senior Assistant Keeper in the Department of Manuscripts,
Paper; ff. iv+221. Notebook (ff. iv+110) with paper covers over boards measuring 203 x 163mm., lettered in ink on spine 'FAM PEDIG.', with leaves countermarked 'Bevan & Co. 1834'. Folios 111-221 bound separately.
Contents:
1. ff. 1-110. Bound notebook bearing the title (f. 1) 'Memoranda Genealogica. 1836 H. E.'. This consists mostly of pedigrees, etc., of the families of Ellis (ff. 46-77), Belknap (ff. 3-4, 78-85), Moore (ff. 22v, 23) and Frost (ff. 24-44), some of them traced back to circa temp. Edward I. Further items, including several letters addressed to Sir H. Ellis, were tipped in between the leaves. Subsequently (see note on f. 1) H. J. Ellis added pedigrees of the related families of Lowth, Eden, Blackwell and Leigh (ff. 96-99).
2. ff. 111-221. Supplementary material (ff. 111-221), found loose in the notebook on its acquisition by the Library, incorporating (ff. 111-142) family correspondence, etc., of Sir Henry Ellis, 1816-1854, with some letters addressed to H. J. Ellis, etc. (ff. 143-174), 1899-1920. Also included are notes, printed pedigrees and newspaper cuttings, 1864-1924, n.d., relating to the families of Bidwell (ff. 147-174), Ellis (ff. 179-191), Belknap (ff. 192-198), Blackwell and Leigh (ff. 199-213).
