8. 'Carte de l'Isle Dieu' (Ile d'Yeu, off coast of the Vendée); Oct. 1795. Cf. Add. 8076, f. 1. Note 'MS given to me by the Count de Puisaye 1815. R. A. D.' [Richard Alfred Davenport]. This map, and 57639 f. 13, a map of the Ile de Noirmoutier, are connected with the ultimately disastrous Royalist insurrection in the Vendée in 1795, in which Comte Joseph de Puisaye led the troops raised in the Vendée itself. He was blamed for the disaster and had to take refuge in Canada where the British government granted him an estate. He failed to re-establish his credit after the Peace of Amiens and was prevented from returning to France even in 1814. He died in poverty in England. R.U.S.I. no. A 9.9.
