R.U.S.I. MAPS. Vol. L. Large maps of Belgrade.
1. 'Plan de la ville et attaque de Belgrad . . . 16 d'Aout 1717', by 'Captain [Sp–eiln?] Anno. 1718'. 1:27850 approx. 'Echelle de 500 Toises' (= 35mm.). Map oriented with South-South-West at top. French. Plan of the attack by the Imperial Army under Prince Eugene of Savoy on the town held by the Turks, with, inset, 'Plan du terrain où la bataille s'est donnée et les approches des Turcs': 1:27850 approx.; 'Echelle de 200 toises' (=14mm.): and, 'Veuë de Bellgrade du côté des attaques de la Save comme aussi du terrible incendie cause par le grand Magazin qui a sauté en air', a perspective view of the explosion and fire, showing a battery of 13 cannon, all firing. Spectacular bird's-eye view of Belgrade and environs, showing not only the battle but the course of the campaign; the scene is enlivened by hundreds of minute figures depicted in fine detail, e.g. a bugle clearly visible on a mounted cavalry officer barely 3mm. from plumed hat to horse's hoof. There are naval skirmishes, including fireships on the Danube, bodies of the slain on the field of battle, turbaned Turks fleeing, complete with their camel-train, the leaders of both armies, including Prince Eugene and the Grand Vizier, and numerous other picturesque details, not the least of which is an artillery regiment coming up in reserve from the north-east with a dancing bear in tow. In the upper left-hand corner are the arms of Prince Eugene, supported by the figures of two naked slaves, chained; below them trophies of Turkish arms, including two severed heads, one with turban and beard, the other with the top knot and long moustaches of a Janissary. 'No.10' (crossed through) and 'No.42' in ink on verso. R.U.S.I. no. HJ 18.
640 x 1115mm.; inset plan and map, 140 x 220mm. The detailed tables on the right- and left-hand edges of the sheet are badly worn and in places illegible.
2. 'Ausfurlicher und speciale Plan sambt einer dazugehörigen Relation was sich in der Campagne von Anno 1739 in Ungarn wieder dem Erbfeind zugetragen und worin sich so woll die Bataille von Krotzka als auch die Aktion beÿ Panzova wie auch die Belagerung Belgrad zeigt'; circa 1739. No scale given. Map oriented with West at top. German. 'No50' in ink on verso. R.U.S.I. no. HJ 23.
