However a second scale 'British statute miles, 691/2 to a degree'; scale bar of 600 miles (= 5 inches) indicates a figure closer to 1:7600000. The map reflects the state of knowledge of the West and North-West of Canada in 1788, before the two great expeditions of Alexander Mackenzie, to the Arctic in 1789, and through the Rockies to the Pacific in 1793. It is based on two main sources: Capt. Cook's survey of the North-West coast of North America in 1778, and the discoveries of the fur-traders and explorers Joseph Frobisher and Peter Pond between 1773 and 1783. Pond made at least two maps of the territory, in 1785 and in 1789, and the earlier of these (for which see Add. 15332 C, D and E) is clearly the basis for the present map. It shows the posts, marked 'J. F.' and 'P. P.', established by the traders, and also the canoe routes leading to L. Athabasca, which they discovered, and where Pond established a trading-post, marked in red. R.U.S.I. no. A 27.47.
