Bauman (b.1739, d.1803) was an engineer in the Austrian Imperial Army who emigrated to America after 1750 and fought in the French and Indian Wars before taking up command in the Revolutionary War. He appears to have begun his survey immediately after Cornwallis's defeat; the finished plan was printed in Philadelphia in 1782. Cf. Add. 15535, f. 6, a much smaller map, which may possibly be a copy of the present map. Presented to the Institution by Col. Sir A. S. Frazer. R.U.S.I. no. A 30.17.

Charleston had been captued by the British in 1780 and was still held by them after the defeat at Yorktown in October 1781, but by December, the safety of the garrison was a matter of great concern, and new defensive works - Hampstead Hill, the New Horn Work, and the New Bastion - were erected. They and the defence erected by Abraham Lincoln in 1780 are all marked on the plan. Presented to the Institution by Col. Sir A. S. Frazer. R.U.S.I. no. A 30.34.
