4. Map of the so-called 'Wilderness Road' towards Ohio, by Capt. T. Bullitt, 'Capt of ye Provincial Regt of Virga'; circa 1773. 1:316800. Scale bar of 30 miles (= 6 inches). Map oriented with West-South-West at top. The map shows the southernmost route along which colonists from the East coast moved westwards into the Ohio Country in the mid 18th century, and although the map is not highly finished, it includes some detailed observations, and much of the Cherokee Indian territory. It demonstrates the rivalry between the British and French governments to control the wealth of the vast territories of the Mississippi/Ohio hinterland. This particular branch of the 'Wilderness Road' continued down the Holston River from the source of Roanoke towards Ft. Loudoun and the Tanasse. Thomas Bullitt had distinguished himself in the Anglo-French War 1754-1763, before turning to surveying and opening up the Ohio Country as a member of the Ohio Land Company, to which George Washington also belonged. In 1773 he led a group of officers down the Ohio River and surveyed the present site of Louisville before returning along the 'Wilderness Road' route shown in the present map. Amherst no. C 35. R.U.S.I. no. A 30.88.
1605 x 760mm.
5. Map of West Florida and the Mississippi River, by 'I. C. Lieutt of Eng=rs'; 1774. 1:936000 approx. Scale bar of 96 miles (= 6.5 inches). The map shows Indian territories, and includes a report by 'I. C.' on the defences of Pensacola (cf. map of Pensacola and report on its poorly situated defences, Add. 57715, f. 20). Amherst no. C 26.
