R.U.S.I. MAPS. Vol. LXXXIV (1-8). Charts of places on the West coast of South America, made on Lord Anson's expedition in HMS Centurion against Spanish settlements; 1740-1742. Complements the collection of drawings in Add. 15536, headlands on the coasts of S. America, taken by Capt. Matthew Mitchell, commander of HMS Gloucester, and second-in-command of the expedition, and Add. 15855, Lord Anson's book of orders for the voyage. Presented (with the exception of Add. 57719, f. 6) to the Institution by Lieut. Windus, HM Indian Navy, in 1862. It should be noted that there are only eight maps in this volume, not eighteen, as stated in the Department of Manuscripts' Rough Register.
1. 'The coast of Chili from Point Deguedar to the Isld Guafo'; circa 1742. 1:585000 approx. 'A scale of 10 leagues' (= 3.25 inches). Map oriented with East at top. Unfinished. R.U.S.I. no. A 32.6.
380 x 545mm.
2. 'A plan of Baldivia on the coast of Chili', by the same hand as Add. 57719, f. 1; circa 1742. 1:190000 approx. Scale bar of '4 Leags' (= 4 inches). The map is unfinished. R.U.S.I. no. A 32.7.
380 x 545mm.
3. 'A plan of Iuan Fernandez island in the South Sea', possibly by Justin Nutt, Master of HMS Centurion; circa 1742. 1:69000 approx. 'A scale of two leagues' (= 5.5 inches). Map oriented with South-South-East at top. The plan is accompanied by an account of the island. Four of the bays have been renamed in pencil. Juan Fernandez Island was the rendezvous set for Anson's squadron after their passage of Cape Horn in early 1741, but only 4 ships (the Centurion, the Gloucester, the Tryal, and the Anne Pink) ever arrived there: after the remnant of the squadron arrived at the known latitude of the island, they mistakenly sailed east, being unable to calculate their longitude - note that the position of the island on the map is calculated in leagues west of Chile. The expedition was forced to retrace its course to reach the island, where they stayed from June to Sept. 1741 to recuperate from the hardships of the voyage. R.U.S.I. no. A 32.9.
275 x 520mm.
4. 'A survey of the north-east side of Iuan Fernandes island in the South Sea'; circa 1742. 1:17600. 'A scale of two English miles' (= 7.2 inches). Map oriented with South-West at top. Inset, two coastal profiles. R.U.S.I. no. A 32.8.
515 x 740mm.
5. 'A view of the islands of Quibo and Quicara'; circa 1742. 1:134000 approx. Scale bar of 3 leagues (= 4.25 inches). Map oriented with West-South-West at top. Inset, coastal profile. The chart shows the East end of Quibo; the view shows both islands. R.U.S.I. no. A 32.10.
360 x 510mm.
6. 'The bay and rocks of Petaplan'; circa 1742. 1:20275. 'A scale of two English miles' (= 6.25 inches). Map oriented with South-East at top. Inset, coastal profile.
350 x 515mm.
7. Another copy of Add. 57719, f. 6, in the same hand. Same scale. R.U.S.I. no. A 30.108.
350 x 485mm.
8. 'A plan of the harbour of Chequetan or Seguataneo'; circa 1742. 1:15360. 'A scale of one English mile' (= 4.125 inches). An account of the harbour and navigation is attached. R.U.S.I. no. A 30.107.
370 x 530mm.
