SIMONIDES PAPERS. VOI. II (ff. 199). (I) Miscellaneous correspondence and papers of Simonides, including letters from his father and other members of his family, and some documents relating to the Greek War of Independence; 1821-1862. Mostly in Greek. Many of the items appear to be fabrications by Simonides. At ff. I32, I55 and I72 are three letters to Simonides from 'Kallinikos' (see 42502 A), 5/I7 Aug. I858, 9 Nov. I86I, 5/I7 Nov. I862. These letters are printed, in English translation (with omissions) in The Literary Churchman, I6 Jan. 1863, with a facsimile of the first letter. ff. I-183.
(2) Tracing, purporting to have been taken from the Codex Sinaiticus (now Add. MS. 43725) as written by Simonides, to show the 'acrostics' which he claimed to have incorporated in the text as evidence of authorship. f. i 84.
(3) Papyrus fragment of the Letter of Aristeas to Philocrates, forged by Simonides, who claimed to have discovered it in the Mayer collection, cf. his Facsimiles of Certain Portions of the Gospel of St Matthew. . ., i 862, p. 8. f. i 8 5.
(4) Printed prospectuses, etc. of works by Simonides, a silhouette and photographs of him and others, and a lithographic drawing of the Monastery of the Archangel Michael at Panormos on the island of Syme, Simonides' birthplace. ff. I84-I99.
