(2) Agreements between Goldsmith and Thomas Davies, bookseller, drawn up in Goldsmith's autograph, and signed by both parties, for:-(a)'An History of England from the birth of the British Empire to the Death of George the Second in four volumes octavo'; 13 June 1769. Printed in the Percy Memoir, p. 78. f. 58;-(b) An abridgement of'Goldsmith's Roman History in two volumes 8vo into one volume in 12-mo'; 15 Sept. 1770. Printed in the Percy Memoir, p. 79. f. 59.
(3) Sixteen leaves, written on one side only, from Goldsmith's original MS., as sent to the printer, of An History of the Earth and Animated Nature, 8 vols., 1 774. The first leaf (f. 62) covers the description of the Lori in vol. iv, p. 241, ll. 9-22, and ofthe Opossum, ibid., P. 242, 1. 23-P. 246, l. 1. The latter description must have begun on an inserted slip, as the text here preserved runs from 'increases the similitude' to 'strange gesta[tion]'. The remaining fifteen leaves (ff. 63-77) cover vol. v, pp. 1-47, 'Of Birds in General', from 'We are now' to 'and its history'. ff. 62-77.
(4) Slip, with a few autograph lines by Goldsmith on his own anonymous History of England in a Series of Letters, 1764. Cf. Balderston, Census, P. 41. f. 79.
(5) Two discarded Epilogues to'She Stoops to Conquer', printed in The Miscellaneous Works, 1801, ii, pp. 82, 87. The second is reprinted in a fuller form in Balderston, Letters, p. xliv. Copies. ff. 81, 83.
(6) Letters to Goldsmith, in most cases with reference to his literary works. Those from Woodfall refer to the 'Threnodia Augustalis' (they are published in Balderston, Letters, pp. xxxiv-xxxvii) and all those of March- April 1773 to 'She Stoops to Conquer'. The writers are:-
