Vol. II. Accompts, legal papers and correspondence mainly relating to Butlers Manor, etc., in Edlesborough, co. Bucks.; 1693-1739, n.d. The names of the writers of letters, etc., will be found in the Index to this Catalogue. At f. 1 is an original memorandum, in French, of matters investigated by Hugh de Berewyk (Seneschal of Henry, 4th Earl of Lancaster, cf. Add. Ch. 22443) on behalf of the Earl as Sheriff of cos. Lanc. and Staff., with Berewyk's replies 'come fust acorde deuant monsieur [i.e. the Earl of Lancaster] et Sir Henry de Walton [Receiver to the Earl, cf. Tout, Chapters in Mediaeval Administrative History, iv, p. 136] en le Peek'. The date must be 1349 or 1350, since one of the items relates to the murder, in 1349, of Adam fil. Nicholas fil. Geoffrey, of Preston, by Thomas Molynex, who was indicted for the offence in 1350 (V.C.H., Lancs., vi, PP. 301, 302, n. 22). The Earl of Lancaster was out of England circ. Oct. 1349 -March 135o, and Walton and Berewyk acted as his general attorneys in his absence, cf. Cal. Close Rolls, 1349, p. 219. Paper; ff. 140. Folio. 1693-1739.
