Vol. 1. Surveys, made 1557-1560 (with later additions at the ends of some of the sections) in connection with the disgavelling of the estates of Sir Edward Wotton (to whom Thomas Wotton had succeeded at the time of the survey) in consequence of a private Act of Parliament, 2 & 3 Edw. V1, a copy of which is prefixed to the present volume (ff. 4-4b; cf. Journals of the House of Commons, i, pp. 8-9). At the end of each section is a statement giving reasons why the lands in question are to be regarded as either freed from gavelkind by the foregoing act, or still subject thereto. Included also are transcripts of evidences, royal and other charters, inquisitions, exemplifications of legal proceedings, etc., including:-(i) an Inquisition post mortem on Nicholas Wotton; 10 July 1492 (Cf. Cal. 1nq. post mortem, Henry VII, i, no. 694). f. 38;-(ii) a composition between the Abbot and Convent of St Augustine, Canterbury, and their tenants of the manor of Minster, in Thanet, co. Kent; 1 June 1441. Latin. ff. 256- 257b;-(iii) documents regarding an annuity for the benefit of the Prebendary of St Pancras in St Paul's Cathedral, London, in respect of the manor of Marlegh al. Marley in Harrietsham, co. Kent, for which see Hasted, History of Kent, ii, PP. 460-462; 3-16 Nov. 1564- ff. 277b- 280. Vellum;ff.xvi+321. 365mm.x285mm. 1557-1560, with later additions. Gatherings of two leaves, ruled in red except ff. 80-87, 282-321. Numerous leaves at the ends of sections, and also ff. 286-321, are blank. According to a note on f. iv b, the manuscript was at that time 'in the handes of Thomas Lambard of Sevenoke in Kent', presumably either Thomas Lambarde of Sevenoaks (d. 1745), great-great-grandson of William Lambarde, the topographer, or his son and heir Thomas (d. 1769). Hodgson's sale-cat., 26-28 Mar. 1929, lot 148 (see ff. i-ii).
