‘A village tale’ (‘Our country homes’), drama in three acts by Charles Reade. Licence sent 11 April 1852 for performance at the Strand 12 April 1852. Title page lists W. R. Copeland as lessee of the Strand Theatre. Songs included in MS. LCO Day Book Add. 53703 records the stipulation that the word ‘damned’ and all oaths be omitted. Play of the same title by A. Younge licensed by the LC in 1850, for which see Add. 43026 (18). Keywords: illegitimacy, land and farming, widows, age and ageing, adultery, dance, death, working women, fallen women.
