'Fra Diavolo! or, The beauty and the brigands', 'a new and original burlesque burletta, founded on a passage in the life of a certain Old Gentleman's Brother', burlesque in one act by H. J. Byron, the music by Auber 'and a few others'. Licence sent 19 March 1858 for performance at the Strand 5 April 1858. 'Copy given to Mr. Pearpoint' written on cover. Songs included in MS. Auber's opera Fra Diavolo had its first performance in Paris in 1830 and was performed in London in English in 1831 and in French in 1849. The impetus to this burlesque is likely to have been the performance in Italian (in Maggioni's translation) at the Lyceum in July 1857, for which see Add. 52967 M.
