'The angel of death' (altered from 'Life, death, and immorality'), drama in four acts by George Conquest. Licence sent 15 May 1861 for performance at the Grecian. Signed B. Conquest, manager. There is some confusion over authorship of the various versions of this play. The Lacy edition of The angel of midnight, by W. E. Suter and T. H. Lacy (Lacy's, vol. 51, no. 761) cites the first production of the French play by T. Barriere and E. Plouvier at the Ambigu-Comique, Paris, on 5 March 1861. It also lists Conquest's production at the Grecian but the script does not agree with the Lacy's version. A further performance is cited as having been mounted at the Standard on 1 June 1861. This was entitled 'The midnight angel, or, Twelve o' clock and the spirit of death', and is clearly attributed to J. T. Douglass on the front cover of the MS. It too varies from the Lacy's edition script. It seems likely therefore that there is no extant MS version of Suter and Lacy's play in the Lord Chamberlain's Plays, which probably means that it was written specifically for publication. For other versions, see Add. 53004 I, 53004 O, and 53011 O.
