Il ballo in maschera, melo-dramatic opera in three acts with a prologue; the words by N. Somma (for the music by Giuseppe Verdi). Printed (G. Stuart, n.d.). Italian with English translation on facing page.. Licence sent 14 June 1861 for performance at the Royal Italian Opera at the Lyceum. Somma's libretto based on A. E. Scribe's libretto Gustave III, ou, Le bal masqué (for the music by Auber), first performed in 1833. Verdi's new rendering was intended for Naples and originally called La vendetta in domino, but political considerations forced the composer and librettist to alter the scenario so that the scene was laid in Boston, Massachusetts and the central character was a governor and not a king. First performed at the Teatro Apollo, Rome, on February 17 1859. This copy is almost identical to that submitted and licensed now at 53005 B, except for the covers and the title-page. In this copy, the title page lists Stuart alone as the printer, with copies available from Hammonds of Regent Street, and the cover consists of advertising matter for Hammonds with their list of Italian operas with English translations on the back cover. Not listed in Nicoll.
