Correspondence relates to Naval strategy and the progress of the war, including discussion of: mines, mine-laying and mine-sweeping; merchant shipping and armament; strikes and labour troubles; possible naval offensive against Germany; shipbuilding and ship repairs; the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and the possibility of creating a separate air service; the possession of Heligoland; the submarine threat and anti-submarine inventions, suggestions and tactics; details of German submarine construction; Navy staff changes and organisation; proposals by Churchill for operations in Heligoland Bight; and munitions including depth charges, shells and guns. Includes hand-drawn diagram of König ship and diagram of the impact of shells on targets. Also includes Jellicoe’s recommendations of officers to be honoured after the Armistice.
