NAPIER PAPERS. Vol. XXXIII A. 'Route of J[ames] G[ilbert] Gerard, Esq. [the surgeon and explorer] from Herat to Peshawur and Husun Abdal. 1833. No. 8 From Lalpoor to Husun Abdal'. Scale bars of forty English miles at five miles to one inch and of forty geographical miles at five miles to 1.15 inch [1.316800]. No cartographer given, but the present map must be the last of a series of 8 sectional maps copied from, or closely related to, a map on the same scale made after Gerard's death by his brother, Captain Alexander Gerard, measuring '10 feet long by 3 broad', which was presented to Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, Baron Metcalfe, as Governor-General of India, 20 Mar. 1835-4 Mar. 1836, and was in 1839 'with the Army of the Indus'. See an extract from a letter of Capt. Gerard to George Lloyd, 18 Oct. 1839, printed by Lloyd in Narrative of a Journey from Caunpoor to the Boorendo Pass . . . , 1840, i, pp. 283-6. No compass points, but north at top. Shows mountains, rivers, towns and villages from Lalpore in the west to Husan Abdal in the east, and from the R. Swat in the north to the R. Toe in the south, with more detailed information given along Gerard's route, marked in red, and those of George Forster in 1783, marked in blue, and the Hon. Mountstuart Elphinstone in 1809, marked in yellow. In addition, the map includes extensive 'Remarks' on such parts as Peshawar, Kohat, and the R. Indus.
