HOLKHAM HALL MSS. Vol. XIV (formerly Holkham MS. 122). ST AMBROSE, HEXAEMERON, etc.; early 11th cent. Latin. Note of ownership of the Canons Regular of S. Giovanni in Verdara near Padua on f. 95b, 16th cent. Bought by Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester, 1717. Bookplate (f. i) of Thomas William Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester of Holkham, 19th cent.
Vellum; ff. ii+95. 330 x 260mm., cropped. Written area 265 x 200mm. Written in North Italy: E is sometimes written with a hook reminiscent of a Beneventan 'e'. Early XI cent. Sec. fol. 'naturali'. Prickings still visible. Ruled in dry point. 2 columns of 37 lines. Gatherings of 8, except i6, ix10 (end of De Paradiso), xii (last; lacks 8). Titles in red, now mostly blackened, on a wash of yellow or green. A few contemporary glosses and variant readings. Many running titles in green frames of various shapes, apparently written before binding; those in the inner margin on ff. 7-8 must have been so written. On f. 12b the scribe or a contemporary has supplied the Greek words with Latin transliterations above the line. Overwritten especially on ff. 1b-2 by a clumsy 14th century hand, which has introduced two errors. List of contents on f. 1: 'In isto volumine continentur examerum duplicatum, expositio ('dicta [Remigii ?] super apocalipsim' deleted) et expositio super simbolum atanasii', 14th cent. Marginal notes (mostly indicators) in 14th and 15th century hands, which have completed lacunae on ff. 20 and 25b. Other annotations on f. 1 include 'Puluere qui ledit scribit in marmore lesus' (last three letters a later addition), 15th cent. Brown calf binding, gilt-stamped and
-tooled ostrich of the Coke family, 19th cent. H. Schenkl, Bibliotheca Patrum Latinorum Britannica, 1891-1907, no. 3409.
Contents:–
1. ff. 1b-58. Hexaemeron, 'Liber Exameron Sancti Ambrosii' (f. 1b). Printed by C. Schenkl, Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, xxxii (1), 1896, pp. 1-261. Agrees closely with Harley MS. 3042, Schenkl's M, Munich cod. lat. 3728 and Schenkl's μ, British Library, IB. 26012, printed at Milan, [1477?], whereas Royal MSS. 6 A. I, 6 A. IX and 6 A. XIV agree with Schenkl's B and his sub-family N' and the editions at Basle, 1492 (IB. 37347) and Cologne, [1480?] (IB. 4267), e.g., in adding 'et angelis tuis', at op. cit., p. 12, l. 17.
2. ff. 58-72b. De Paradiso, 'Incipit Tractatus eiusdem beatissimi Ambrosii episcopi de Paradiso' (f. 58). Printed by Schenkl, op. cit., pp. 263-336. Ends at 15, 76 'uiuit in me Christus', followed by 31/2 blank lines (Schenkl, p. 335, l. 9). The only other British Library MS., Harley MS. 3042, ends a few lines earlier, on f. 119, (imperfect) at 'in quadam mali[tia]' (Schenkl, p. 335, l. 3), and agrees in some readings with Schenkl's B. As in the Hexaemeron, both these MSS. are related (e.g. the Greek words in Schenkl, pp. 271, 272, and the corrupt passage at Schenkl, p. 274, l. 12) to Munich cod. lat. 3728 and the Milan edition of [1477?], though these last are complete.
3. ff. 73-84. De Sacramentis, 'Incipit Exameron Paschale Sancti Ambrosii'
(f. 73). Printed by O. Faller, Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, lxxiii, 1955, pp. 13-85. Ends at VI, 24 'et in omnia saecula' (f. 84), omitting VI, 25, 26 (Faller, p. 83, l. 57). Used by Faller under the siglum π (p. 31*). Most closely related to Vatican ant. lat. 282, Faller's η, and Ambrosianus B. 54 inf., Faller's ß (p. 40*), which have the same title 'Exameron paschale' and the same final omission, and probably represent a North Italian recension, 11th cent., perhaps made at Padua or Bova. The editio princeps of this and De Mysteriis, 1490, was printed from a MS. of this family (Faller, op. cit., pp. 48*, 59*). Faller defends the authenticity of this treatise and 'De Mysteriis' (op. cit., pp. 19*-30*). See also Royal MSS. 5 F. IV and 6 B. VI, Harley MSS. 865 and 3097, and Add. MS. 18327.
4. ff. 84-89. De Mysteriis, 'Incipit Sancti Ambrosii Mediolanensis episcopi de Mysteriis' (f. 84). Printed by Faller from this MS. (op. cit., pp. 87-116) as his π. Most closely related to Faller's η, Florence, Laur. S. Crucis XVII dext. 12 (C) and Monza bibl. Capitularis LXV (F) (op.cit., p. 56*). See also MSS. noted in (3) above and Add. MS. 18332.
5. ff. 89-92. Catechism on the Athanasian Creed, 'Incipit expositio fidei catholicae' (f. 89). Beg. 'Hanc fidem quae catholica dicitur'. Ends 'impossibile est Deo placere'. A re-arranged version of the same text is at
f. 145 of Royal MS. 8 B. XIV, which is related to a number of German manuscripts and British Library IA. 11407, an undated edition attributed to Trier; A. E. Burn, The Athanasian Creed and its Early Commentaries, 1896, p. 43. Both are related more nearly than the other commentaries printed by Burn to the Stavelot Commentary, printed from Add. MS. 18043 on pp. 12-20.
6. ff. 92-94b. Directions for holding a Council. Beg. 'Hora diei prima'. Ends 'illesi. Quod ipse prestare . . . permanet in saecula saeculorum'. Printed by
P. Hinschius, Decretales Pseudo-Isidorianae, 1863, pp. 22-4, with variations of order and rubric. Includes two additional prayers, 'Reverentissimi et sanctissimi . . . perueniat statum' (f. 92b); see M. Andrieu, Le Pontifical romain au Moyen-âge, i, 1938, p. 257 (Studi e testi, 86); and 'Dilectissimi et uenerabiles fratres . . . laudes et gratias referamus' (f. 93), corresponding loosely to the prayer 'Dilectissimi . . . augmentum aeternae beatitudinis omnium nostrum' (Andrieu, op. cit., pp. 258-9). Followed (ff. 93b-94b) by 'Epilogus breviter digestus', beg. 'Quamquam a sanctis patribus in superioribus huius libelli partibus', ends 'declinantes ambulent. quatenus diuinis iussionibus . . . perueniri mereantur'.
7. ff. 94b-95b. The Seven Wonders of the World. 'Incipit de septem mundi miraculis' (f. 94b). Beg. 'Primum miraculum est capitolium Romae'. Ends 'cxxviii columnae finem faciunt et hoc aedificium ualde mirabile'. See
M. Manitius, Geschichte der lateinischen Literatur des Mittelalters, iii, 1931, p. 244.
