HOLKHAM HALL MSS. Vol. XVII (formerly Holkham MS. 320). OVID, FASTI, in six books; early 13th cent. Preceded (ff. 1-3) by the Roman calendar from January to June, early 13th cent. Includes, like Add. MS. 49368, book ii,
ll. 203-204; omits iv, 136-137; reads 'quae mundum' at v, 25; omits vi, 271-276; includes iii, 401-402, after vi, 718; and omits vi, 739-740. See H. Le Bonniec, Les Fastes, 2 vols., 1969, 1970. Cited as 'Petavianus secundus' by Nicolaus Heinsius in his edition of Ovid, 1652. Identified by Professor E. H. Alton, 11 Sept. 1931 (note on f. iii). Petrus Burmann records Heinsius's notes and readings in his edition, 1727. Used also by Rudolf Merkel under the siglum ψ in his P. Ovidii Nasonis Fastorum Libri Sex, 1841, (see p. cclxxx). Discussed by F. W. Lenz, 'Eine übersehene Ovidhandschrift des Nicolaus Heinsius', Eranos, lv, 1957, pp. 60-1, and D. F. Wormell, 'The identification of the manuscripts of Ovid's Fasti known to Heinsius', Hermathena, xciii, 1959, pp. 45, 49. See also F. Peeters, Les 'Fastes' d'Ovide: histoire du texte, 1939, who records 130 extant MSS. on p. 177, note 2, but wrongly identifies the 'Petavianus secundus' as Vatican MS. 3265. See also Harley MSS. 2489, 2538, 2564 (wrongly identified as Merkel's 'h' by Peeters, op. cit., pp. 157, 180), 2654, 2655, 2695, 2703, 2737, 2738, Burney MS. 221, Add. MSS. 11969-11973, 21169, 21226, 49368, and the excerpts in Add. MS. 18459, f. 5, which depend on Vincent of Beauvais, Speculum Historiale, which in turn depends on Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale MS. lat. 17903. See E. H. Alton,
D. E. W. Wormell and E. Courtney, 'A Catalogue of the Manuscripts of Ovid's Fasti', Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies, xxiv, 1977, pp. 37-63. Signature as owner ('Pa Petauius') on f. 4 and press-mark 'K.41' on f. 3 of Paul Petau (b. 1568, d. 1614). No. l388 in the library of Petaus's son, Alexandre. See Leyden MS. Voss. Lat. Q. 76, f. 81b. The Petau manuscripts were acquired by Isaac Vossius (b. 1618, d. 1689) for Queen Christina of Sweden, 1650. Most are now in the Vatican Library, but a number are among the Vossiani in Leyden University Library. See K. A. de Meyïer, Paul en Alexandre Petau en de geschiedenis van hun handschriften, 1947. Signature, as owner, on f. 4, of Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester, who probably acquired it on the Continent, 1712-1718. Bookplate of Thomas William Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester of Holkham, on
f. i, 19th cent. See S. de Ricci, A Handlist of Manuscripts in the Library of the Earl of Leicester at Holkham Hall, 1932, p. xi. Note by Charles Warburton James, librarian at Holkham, on f. iii, circa 1931.
Vellum; ff. iii+58. 230 x 150mm. Written area 180-190 x 65mm. Ff. 1-3 are irregular in size. Early XIII cent. Written perhaps in Italy. Sec. fol. 'Iuppiter arce'.
