HOLKHAM HALL MSS. Vol. XXI (formerly Holkham MS. 476). CHRONICLE OF THE COUNTS OF THE MARK, in Westphalia, to 1358, followed by other works by Levold von Northof, Canon of Liège and secular Abbot of Visé; completed circa 1358 (f. 30b), with additions on ff. 32b-33, 17th cent. Latin. Written for presentation to Count Engelbert III (b. 1334, d. 1391) at Altena castle, probably under the author's direction; the partly erased colophon to the chronicle on f. 31b declares the author's intention that it should be presented to the Count of the Mark at Altena castle, that it should not leave the castle, and that the wife of Detmar the castellan or in her absence the chaplain, and, in succession, Detmar's son, should be responsible for its custody. Fully described by W. Levison in Neues Archiv der Gesellschaft für ältere deutsche Geschichtskunde, xxxii, 1907, pp. 385-424. See also B.M.Q., xxi, 1957-8, p. 66. Edited from this, the oldest extant MS., by F. Zschaeck, Monumenta Germ. Hist.: Scriptores rerum Germanicarum, n.s., vi, 1929. The remaining contents are:- (i) Genealogical tables of the Counts of the Mark to Johann Wilhelm (succeeded 1592), and of the lords of Berg and Aremberg, added on blank leaves of the MS.; early 17th cent.
ff. 32b-33;- (ii) 'Genealogia comitum de Marka'. Edited by Zschaeck, ibid.,
pp. 100-4. ff. 34b-35b;- (iii) Proverbs, moral sayings, etc. ('flosculi morales') collected from the Scriptures and classical authors. ff. 35b-41b;- (iv) Prayers for particular occasions and intentions, mostly from the Fathers. ff. 43-49b;-
(v) Catalogue of the Archbishops of Cologne to Heinrich von Virneburg
(d. 1332), continued on f. 51b in a closely similar hand as far as Wilhelm von Gennep (cons. 1349; d. 1362), here described as the present archbishop. Followed in a later hand by the date '1378'. Printed for the most part by H. Cardauns, Mon. Germ. Hist.: Scriptores, xxiv, 1879, pp. 358-62, from other MSS. ff. 50-55b. Belonged to Andreas Erasmus Seidel, of Berlin, at whose sale, 1718, it was acquired by Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester. See S. de Ricci, A Handlist of Manuscripts . . . at Holkham Hall, 1932, pp. x, xi, 41.
Vellum; ff. iv+55. 335 x 240mm. Written area 240 x 165mm. Circa 1358, XVII cent. Sec. fol. 'et priori'. Pricked, ruled and written in one book hand throughout, except for item (i). Double columns of 35 lines. Gatherings, noted when the MS. was pulled, 1974, i8-iii8, iv16 5 cancelled (9, 10 (ff. 32-33) and 13, 14 (ff. 36-37) are bifolia apparently so placed contemporaneously with the writing of the text; see Levison, op. cit., p. 401, who notes that the erased text on f. 34 continues f. 28b and was presumably written erroneously on a leaf already containing, on the verso, the opening of the Genealogia), v12 3 cancelled, lacks 12, vi6. Catchwords, i-iv. Large ornamental initial on f. 1, red initials and rubrics. Marginal annotations, 14th-17th cent., passim. Roman foliation, i-xxxii, on ff. 1-32, 16th cent. F. ivb is part of a deed relating to the diocese of Cologne, 15th cent., with the notarial device 'Conscientia mille testes', the back of which bears notes relating to the contents of the MS., with the contemporary numbers '351' (cancelled) and '175' in ink, 17th cent., and later additions 'No 68' and 'No 24' in pencil. F. iv was reversed in the previous binding, the present verso being covered by a paper leaf. See Levison, op. cit., pp. 387-8. Binding of brown calf with the gilt ostrich stamp of T. W. Coke, 19th cent. Bookstamp (an ostrich circumscribed by the name of Thomas William Coke) formerly at f. i. Signature of Thomas William Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester of Holkham, on f. iib.
