HOURS, &C., in Latin, apparently of French Benedictine use of the congregation of Tiron (see below, artt. 2, 3, 6, 7). Contents:-(i) Hours of the Virgin. f. 1;(2) 'Suffragia per totum annum dicenda post laudes et vesperas': commemorations of the Trinity, Cross, S. Benedict, All Saints, and 'de pace'. f. 50 b ; - (3) ' Benedictiones singulis lectionibus nocturnalibus premittende, et primo in festis duodecim lectionum', &c. f. 55 b ; -(4) Hours of the Cross. f. 57 b;-(5) Hours of the Holy Spirit. f. 60;-(6) Penitential Psalms and Litany. In the latter, S. Peter is duplicated at the head of the apostles; among other French saints the martyrs include Savinus [Poitou], the confessors Leobinus [of Poitiers, Bishop of Chartres], Launomarus [Blois, diocese of Chartres], Reverentius, and Bernard. The last named, who is duplicated, is doubtless to be identified not with Bernard of Clairvaux (since the use is evidently not Cistercian) but with his namesake of Abbeville, prior of S. Savin, in the diocese of Poitiers, and founder and first abbot of Tiron (dioc. Chartres), which became the head of a Benedictine congregation (cf. art. 7 below). The virgins include Austreberta and Radegundis. ff 63 b, 71;-(7) 'Officium defunctorum'. At the beginning of matins (f. 80b) the usual invitatory is followed by 'Aliud in obitu primi patris nostri Bernardi'. Imperf. at end. f. 77 b.
Vellum; ff. 95. 61/8 in. x 3 7/8 in. End of XV cent. Gatherings of 8 leaves (vi9, vii6, ix7, x9). Twelve full-page miniatures in architectural frames, inferior French work; partial borders and initials throughout. The subjects of the miniatures are:-
1. Annunciation. Below, on the frame, is an unfinished shield of arms (nuarterly, sable and argent) with a crozier (?). f. 1.
2. Visitation. f. 14 b.
3. Nativity. f. 22.
4. Angel and shepherds. f. 26 b.
5. Adoration of the Magi. f. 31 b.
6. Presentation in the Temple. f. 36 b.
7. Flight into Egypt. f 42.
8: Coronation of the Virgin. f.47b.
9. Crucifixion. f. 57 b.
10. Pentecost. f. 60.
11. David and Bathsheba. f. 63b.
