'LETTERE di Monsignore Carlo Visconte, vesc 0 di Ventimilia [Cardinal 1565, d. 1565], al Cardinale Carlo Borromeo nel tempo di Papa Pio IV, pertinenti al sacro Concilio di Trento': copies of the letters and reports to Borromeo from Visconti, when acting as confidential minister of Pope Pius IV at the concluding sessions of the Council of Trent; 29 May, 1562-6 Sept. 1563. Arranged in three books. Ital. They appear to have been used by Fra Paolo Sarpi, and are frequently cited by his translator and commentator Le Courayer: see Sarpi, Hist. du Concile de Trente, 1736, i, p. iv, ii, pp. 201, 216, &c. The later documents (1 Feb.-6 Sept. 1563) were published with French translations by J. Aymon, Lettres, &c, du Nonce Visconti, 1719, but with some variations from the present version; e. g. the first of the printed letters, 1 Feb. 1563, is wanting here, and the second, of 11 Feb.) is considerably longer here (f. 203 b) and quite different in the opening wide paragraphs. Another edition of the text was published by J. D. Mansi in S. Baluzii Miscellanea, iii, 1762, P. 433, consisting of (a) 8 letters, 10 Dec. 1562-6 Jan. 1563 (= ff. 178-187 b of the present MS.), from a Siena MS.;-(b) The letter of 1 Feb. 1563, from Aymon;-c) 68 letters (the first imperfect), [8 Feb.]-24 Aug. 1563 (= ff. 202-356), from a MS. of his own.
