M. TULLIUS CICERO, twelve orations (including the spurious controversy with Sallust) and three letters, viz. Pro Sexto Roscio Amerino, f. 1;-pro M. Marcello, f 30 b;-pro Q. Ligario, f. 37;-pro Rege Deiotaro, f. 44 b;-de imperio Cn. Pompeii, f 53 b;-
pro T. Annio Milone, f. 69 b ;-pro Archia Poeta, f. 94; -pro Cn. Plancio, f. 102;-oratio cum senatui gratias egit, f. 129 b - oratio pridie quam in exilium iret, f. 140b;-'inuectiua Crispi Salustii contra M. Tullium Ciceronem' (spurious), f. 147 b ;-'inuectiua M. T. Ciceronis in Crispum Salustium' (spurious), f.149,- epistola ad Quintum Fratrem (ad Q. F. i. I), beg. 'Etsi non dubitabam', f 154;-epistola ad eundem (really the Commentariolum petitionis consulatus, addressed by Quintus to Marcus), beg. 'Etsi tibi omnia suppetunt', f. 164 b; epistola ad cundem (ad Q. F. i. 3), beg. 'Mi frater, mi frater', f. 175. The text in the Pro Milone certainly belongs to the deteriores (though lacunae in §§ 78, 79 have been filled in the margin from a better source), and in the other orations and letters the case is probably similar. Vellum; ff. 177. 10 1/2 in.x71/4 in. Latter half of XV cent. Written in a handsome humanistic hand in Italy. Gatherings of 10 leaves, with catchwords written at right angles to the text. Sec. fol. 'ei pecunie'. At ff. 101 b, 153 b the scribe has added as colophon ' Vale Gaspar' (cf. nos. 18, 20). As to Gaspars identity there is no information. Was he possibly Gaspar of Verona, professor of rhetoric and biographer of Paul II (see G. L. Marini, Degli Archiatri Pontifici, I, p. 176 n.)? A richly illuminated initial and border (f. 1) of interlaced white vine-tendril pattern on pricked gold, in which is a shield of unidentified arms: or, a bend gu., cotised arg.. (cf. no. 22 below) ; similarly illuminated initials are at the beginning of each oration or epistle. Bound like nos. 16, 17. Belonged to Joseph Smith, Consul at Venice, Bibl Smith., p. cxiv, col. i.
