M. TULLIUS CICERO, Orationes Philippicae xiv; followed (f. 168 b) by 'Somnium Scipionis e VI [libro] De republica excerptum', which has the colophon (f. 175) in red 'Haud amplius comperi et utinam librum hunc perfectum haberemus'; and (f. 176) 'M. Cicero Octaviano', the spurious letter to Octavianus (printed at the end of vol. iii in Purser's edition of Cicero's letters). A few notes and emendations are added throughout the volume in red ink. Vellum; ff. 178. 7 3/4 in. x 5 in. Latter half of XV cent. Written in Italy, apparently in the same hand as nos. 18,22,and for the same .person as no. 18. Gatherings of 10 leaves,with catchwords written at right angles to the text. Sec fol. 'respondebat'. At the end of or. xiii the scribe has written 'vale mea lux' and at the end of or. xiv and each of the two last articles 'vale Gaspar', in the last case adding in red ' et iterum uale'. Cf. nos. 18, 19. Illuminated initials (vine-tendril pattern, of indifferent execution) at the beginning of each oration and of the Somnium, and on f. 1 a border enclosing a shield of arms of Mocenigo, of Venice. Bound like no. 18. Belonged to Joseph Smith, Consul at Venice, Bibl. Smith., p. cxiv, col. 1.
