JUVENAL, PERSIUS, &C., Viz:-

1 'L. (sic, for D. Iuni) Iuuenalis Aquinatis satirarum liber i ' (-xvi). Wants the following lines:-iv. 23, vi.

126, viii. 7, x. 13-14 ('census . . . Britannica'), xi. 165, 166, xvi. 21. At the end, after 'Finis' (f. 93 b), is the epigram on the Roman printer Ulrich Han, beg. 'Anser Tarpei custos Iouis: unde quod alis', which is appended to his edition of Juvenal (circ. 1470). f 1.

2. 'Auli Flacci Persii satirarum liber' : the prologue and six satires. Wants lines iii. 34, and 88-89 ('et aegris ... halitus'), vi. 26. f. 94.

3. 'Galli poetac clarissimi V[irgiIi] Maronis contemporanei libellus incipit' : the elegies of Maximianus Etruscus, a writer of late imperial times, see Royal MS.

15 A. vii, art. 4. The attribution to C. Cornelius Gallus has been supposed to be due to Pomponius Gauricus, a young Neapolitan, under whose auspices they were printed at Venice in 1501, but the verses may have been current under Gallus's name at an earlier date. The text of the MS. differs in places from that of Gauricus, and the couplet (iv. 25 in the editions) in which Maximianus's name occurs is not omitted. The poems were edited by Baehrens, Poetae Latini Minores, v, P. 313, and from an 11th cent. MS. at Eton by Petschenig (Berliner Studien für class. Philologie, xi. 2, 1890). The division of the poems differs from the editions, ii, iii, iv being combined together, and similarly v, vi. f. III. Beg. :-

'Emula quid cessas finem properare senectus Cur et in hoc tardo corpore tarda uenis'. At the end (f. 127 b) are ten lines with the heading , 'Isti uersiculi indicant Gallum antiquitatem redolere' (in Gauricus' edition there are twenty-four lines with the heading 'Sepuens (sic) Lyricum quia a plerisque C. Gallo attribuitur Hoc loco subscribendum putaui'). Beg:-

Lidia bella puella candida Que bene superas lac et lilium'. Vellum; ff. 1 + 127 5¹/₂ in. x 3 ³/₈ in. Written in Italy, in a hand of the same type as the preceding MS. End of XV cent. Gatherings of 8 leaves ( i¹⁰, xii¹², end of art. 2, xiii, xiv¹⁰), lettered, without catchwords. Sec. fol. ' Plena ipso'. Small illuminated initials and on f. 1 border with two shields of arms of Badoero of Venice, bendy of six gu. and arg. [more correctly gu., three bends arg.], over all a lion rampant or (the lions in the two shields are affronted by the illuminator for symmetry). On f. 1 are scribbled dates 'Laus deo 1523, alli 12, Luio a hora de uesporo. alli 27 Septembre a hore 4 de notte'. Vellum binding.
