'MEMOIRE sur l'etat present de l'Europe, par un ministre [Charles Louis Auguste de Fouquet, Maréchal Duc de Bellisle] attaché aux veritables interets de la France.' The memoir, the object of which is stated (f. 17) to be 'de prouver la necessité de diviser (pour le bien de la France) la Puissance Autrichienne', sets forth the state of Europe on the death of the Emperor Charles VI in 1740, and the claims of the rival aspirants to the succession which Charles, by his Pragmatic Sanction, had settled on his daughter Maria Theresa. After the title has been inserted the date 1747, but as Charles Albert, Duke of Bavaria, whose claims the memoir advocates, was elected Emperor of Germany as Charles VII in 1742 and died in 1745, it is evident that it was written earlier, and probably in 1740 or 1741. At the end is a note in the copyist's hand, 'N.B. Il y a un second memoire, duquel on n'a pas pu tirer copie'.
Paper; ff. 27. Folio. XVIII cent. Belonged to 'the late Duke of Cumberland' [?William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, d. 1765].
