'THE PRESENT STATE of Guernsey with a short accompt of Iersey and the Forts belonging to the said Islands, by Colnll George Legge [Baron Dartmouth, 1682], Lieutenant-General of His Maties; Ordnance', 1680, with elaborately-coloured title-page enclosing, at the head, the royal arms and, at the foot, arms and crest of Legge, and many charts, plans, and views of Guernsey, Jersey, and Sark by Thomas Phillips, Engineer. On f. 2 is the letter of Col. Legge, dat. 9 Jan. 1680/81, presenting the report to King [Charles II]. Included are:-
1. 'A breife state of Guernsey by the Right Honoble Christopher, [2nd] Lord Hatton, present Governor', with lists of names of (a) Beneficed Clergymen in the Island, (b) Officers of the Court, (c) Commissioned Officers of the Island Companies, (d) Vessels belonging to the Island, with names of the masters and owners, (e) Governors of the Island from A. D. IIII. f 8.
2. Lists of records relating to the Islands in the 'Rolles Chappell', the Tower, and in the 'Paper Office in Whitehall'. ff. 16, 17, 18.
3. Surveys and estimates made by Sir Bernard de Gomme, Chief Engineer and Assistant Surveyor of H.M. Ordnance, (a) 'of the Repaires of Castle Cornett', 27 May, 1680. f. 27;-(b) 'of the repairing of the castle called Chasteau du Vall', 28 May, 1680. f 41;-(C) On the islands and its forts in general, 10 June 1680. f. 54.
4. Particulars of ordnance, stores, &c., at Castle Cornet and other forts in Guernsey, by Capt. Richard Leake, Master Gunner of England, 26, 28 May, 1680. ff. 35, 55.
5. 'Observations and opinion of Capt. Christopher Gunman, concerning the Harbor of Guernsey called Bouch de Valle', 2I May, 1680; followed by Capt. Leake's account of the same, 23 May, 1680. f. 44.
