'HISTORIE VENETE' : a chronicle of Venetian history from the time of Attila to the death of Doge Andrea Contarini in 1382, by Giovanni Giacomo Caroldo, Secretary of the Council of Ten [early 16th cent.]. Italian. In ten books, the first seven (to Sept. 1354) having a 'Tavola delle cose piu notabili' on f. 207 and the last three (Sept. 1354-June, 1382) a similar table on f. 412. The author's introduction (f. 2), addressed to the Doge, Senate, and 'gentilhuomini' of the Venetian republic, beg. 'Sogliono gli huomini'. The work itself beg. 'Atila Rè de' Heruli' and ends 'che andiate à ripossare '. It has never been printed in extenso, but extracts have been published (see G. Soranzo, Bibliografia Veneziana, 1885, pp. 69, 772). Several MS. copies are extant (see P. Daru, Histoire de Venise, vii 1853, p. 162), and it has been much used by Venetian historians (e.g. see E. A. Cigogna, Delle Inscrizioni Veneziane, vi, 1853, pp. 63, 70, &C.). Copies of the narrative of the Tiepolo-Querini conspiracy (ff. 123 b- 131) are in King's 150, art.2, and Add. MSS. 8585, 8586 (f. 368), and 10695 A note on f. 1 refers to 'an account of this book at the beginning of Delfin's Annali Veneti, 4to, MS.' (now King's MS. 149, f. 2b). Paper; ff. 414. Folio. 121/2 in. x 8 1/4 in. XVII cent. Vellum binding with arms as on nos. 14, 15. Belonged to Joseph Smith, Consul at Venice, Bibl. Smith., p. xcv, col. 1.
