'CRONICA Venetiarum per annos domini diuisa sub breui titulo compilata Petro Iustiniano Iustiniani [over an erasure] filio authore': a chronicle of Venetian history from the fall of Troy, anno mundi 4206, to A. D. 1358; with an appendix of documents, lists of officials, &c., 883-1573. Latin, except a few documents in Italian. This chronicle bears no resemblance to the wellknown Rerum Venetrum Historia (Venice, 1560, &C.) of Pietro Giustiniani, son of Alvise, and is evidently the work of an earlier writer, perhaps the' Piero Giustiniano di Giustiniano di Piero', fl. 1410, WhO is mentioned by M. Foscarini, Della Letteratura Veneziana, 1752, p. 143 (for the passage referred to in the foot-note cf 83 of this MS.). Another chronicler of the same name is mentioned by Foscarini, p. 115 (see too E. A. Cigogna, Delle Inscrizioni Veneziane, iv, 1834, pp. 189, 689; but he seems too early, his father is named Tommasino, and the passage cited does not occur in the MS. (cf. f. 72 b). On the leaf preceding the chronicle (f. 15) are inscribed, in the same hand and presumably copied from the archetype (cf. inscription with date 1354, on f. 197 b, noted below), (i) 'Questa Cronica e di io Andrea Contarini fo de M. Marco, la qual compri da Mo. Frano. scrittor, sta in la cale delle stagnade à S. Saluador, che uende libri, costame L i à oro, fo adi 18 Auasto 1481' ;-
(ii) entries in Latin, purporting apparently to be by the chronicler, of the births of his son Justinianus and daughters Cecilia, Agnes, Justiniana, and Catarina, 1348-1357, and the death of his father Justinianus Justinianus (Captain-General against the Turks 1348, Count and Captain of Zara 1351, Podestà of Chioggia 1354) in 1357. This Giustiniano appears, as son of Bernardo, in tav. iv of the pedigree of Giustiniani of Venice in Litta, Famiglie Celebri Italiane, fasc. 48, disp. 78 (1840); but no mention is made there of his descendants. The chronicle seems to be identical with that contained (anonymously) in the Paris MS. Bibl. Nat, lat. 5877 (see P. Daru, Hist. de Venise, vii, 1853, p. 161; A. Prost, in Revue des Questions Historiques, xxxi, 1882, P. 545). Down to the death of Doge Bartolommeo Gradenigo in 1342 it agrees with a chronicle ending at that point and attributed to Andrea Dandolo, Doge 1343-1354, which is extant in MSS. at Venice (see J. Valentinelli, Bibliotheca MS. ad S. Marci Venetiarum, vi, 1873, p. 168) and Munich, and is classified by H. Simonsfeld, Andreas Dandolo und seine Geschichtswerke, 1876, pp. 39, 43-53, as Recension B of the so-called 'kleine Chronik Andreas Dandolos'. And the special attention given to the Dandolo family in the appended lists of officials (see below, artt. 13,14) is probably significant in this connexion. There is no break here at 1342 beyond the usual fresh paragraph, and the text goes on (f 97 b): 'Andreas Dandulo cum sancti Marci foret eclesiæ procurator'. Beg. 'Predecessorum nostrorum auctoritate testante equidem ante constitutionem presentis urbis Venetiarum altera Venetia fuit '. Ends (f. 109 b) 'Huius etiam tempore, anno Domini 1358, ad dicta loca Triuisanæ recuperata, infrascripti nobiles fuerunt per electionem Maioris Consilii destinati ... in Valle Marini, Dominus Paulus Georgio'. f. 16.
