Two copies of a treatise, in Italian, on the constitution of the Venetian Republic, composed towards the end of the 17th cent, and usually attributed to Count Francesco Udalrico della Torre, imperial ambassador to Venice, d. 1695 (see Daru, Hist. de Venise, vii, P. 58; Cigogna, Delle Inscr. Ven., i, p. 41, iii, pp. 481, 516, iv, p. 676). There are considerable differences between the two copies, which are in different hands. The second, which is nearly twice as long, containing discussions of the several offices of state which are omitted or abridged in the first (e.g. cf. ff. 170-206b with f. 70), is entitled (f. 79) ' Notizia deI gouerno della Repubblica Viniziana', addressed to 'Sacra Cesarea Maestà' [the Emperor Leopold I] and beg. Another copy, naming Della Torre as author, is in Add. MS. 20975; another (anonymous) was printed by G. Bacco, Relazioize sulla organizzazione politica della Repubblica di Venezia, 1856. These two, apart from textual variations, agree in the main with the second version of the present MS. Another copy is in the Paris MS. Arsenal 8571, see H. Martin, Cat. des MSS. de la Bibl. de l'Arsenal, vi, 1892, p. 496. Paper; ff. 253. Quarto. 10 3/4 in. x 71/2 in. XVIII cent. Vellum binding, with arms as on no. 14.
