OFFICIAL DUPLICATE REPORTS and papers relating to the Laws and Government of the Province of Quebec, drawn up, by Order in Council dat. 28 Aug. 1767, under the superintendence of Guy Carleton [Baron Dorchester, [1786], Governor of Quebec. Preceded by his letter to [Wills Hill,] Earl of Hillsborough, Secretary of State, forwarding the reports, &c., dat. Quebec, 18 Sept. 1769. The contents are :-
1. Report of G. Carleton and William Hey, Chief Justice of Quebec, ' upon the Laws and Courts of Judicature in the Province'; 15 Sept. 1769. Signed. f. 5. Followed by (a) Report of the Chief Justice on the points in which he dissents from the Governor's views; 15 Sept. Signed. f. 48;-(b) Similar dissentient report of Francis Maseres, Attorney-General of Quebec ; 11 Sept. Signed. f. 59.
2. Compendium of the civic laws and regulations in force under the French rule, viz.: (a) ' Loix et usages'. f. 68;-(b) ' Loix criminelles'. f. 345;-(c) 'Loix de Police'. f 363. Printed, under the title, An Abstract of those parts of the Custom ... of Paris ... practised in the Province of Quebec, &c., London, 1772.
3. Extracts of royal edicts, orders, regulations, &c., in force in Canada under French rule; 1663-1756. French. Certified by F[rançois] J[oseph] Cugnet, French Secretary to the Governor, 13 Sept. 1769. Printed, op. cit. f. 399.
4. Warrants and commissions of Louis XIV and Louis XV, appointing governors, establishing the Superior Council, imposing duties on merchandise, &c.; 1663-1748. Certified as true copies from the original records at Quebec by George Allsopp, Deputy Clerk of Enrolments, 6 Sept. 1769. f. 411.
