TRACTS on artillery and other military subjects, in French, with diagrams in pen-and-ink, dedicated to William III by an officer who signs himself 'Le C. D. O.'; Londres, 10 Oct. 1690. He says that he came to England to do the King some service, and having to wait longer than he expected has employed himself in the composition of these papers. Incidentally he mentions (f. 32b) that he was in the previous year in the garrison of Ath when the Maréchal d'Humières was allowed to march close by the town without being fired upon; also (f. 40) that he was at Versailles about 1684. The subjects are:-(a) 'Moyen pour couurir et cacher vne batterie contre le feù de celle des ennemis dans la dèffence d'une place': a disappearing platform. f. 4;-(b) 'Bombes d'une grande vtilité et d'une grande execution'. f. 20b;-(c) 'Vn mousquet d'un grand seruice', with attached hinged 'fourchette'. f 24b ;-
(d) A light breech-loading cannon. f. 32 b;-(e) A sighting apparatus. f. 36b;-(f) A water-level. f. 38b; -(g) Floating mine to destroy a bridge. f. 43b ;-(h) Swimming-belts for crossing a river, &c. f. 49 b;-(i) A mortar built in sections. f. 53 b ;-(k) A catapult for bombs. f 63 b ;-(l) An improved fireship. f. 73 b.
Paper; ff. 78. Folio. 141/4 in. x 8 3/4 in. A. D. 1690. Red morocco binding with tooled panels, royal arms (of the Stuart form) apparently original (G. R. III added later).
